Eczema

What is the skin condition, eczema?

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a skin-related disorder that results in dry, inflamed, and itchy patches over the skin. Although eczema is a widespread condition commonly affecting children, the skin disorder can occur in adults, too.

What are the common signs of eczema?

  • Dry skin
  • Skin itchiness
  • Crusting and oozing of the skin
  • Rash on inflated parts of the skin that differ in colour.
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Skin sensitivity because of persistent inflammation and scratching.

What are some of the causes of eczema?

Exposure to certain types of weather patterns, such as arid and cold weather, can result in eczema flare-ups. In addition, certain types of allergens, such as pet dander, dust mites, pollen and mould, can induce symptoms.

Additional potential causes are related to the following:

  • Wearing specific types of clothing (synthetic fibres and wool).
  • Fluctuating hormones during the menstrual cycle and pregnanc
  • Infection of the skin
  • Food allergies (eggs, cow’s milk, soya and nuts).

How does Dr Kunene diagnose atopic dermatitis?

Initially, Dr Kunene will enquire about your symptoms, review your medical history, and examine your skin. He may also need to test for allergies or potential triggers of eczema symptoms. For example, a simple test like a patch test helps identify the allergen-triggering eczema. During a patch test, specific portions of a substance are administered topically. Over time, during several appointments, the doctor assesses your skin to check for any visible signs of a reaction.

How do you treat atopic dermatitis?

Unfortunately, atopic dermatitis remains incurable, but symptoms can be managed effectively with appropriate treatment measures in place.

Such treatments include the following:

  • Moisturiser can be applied daily to prevent the skin from drying out.
  • Corticosteroids can be applied topically to avoid eczema flare-ups, such as skin inflammation.
  • Antihistamines to reduce itching.

Treatment is based on your symptoms, a comprehensive clinical diagnosis, and treatment preferences.
